I bought these off eBay a few years back (long enough ago the listing is no longer available). When I got them in, I realized they wouldn’t work for my application so they went into storage. Five years later I am looking at them again and... I have no idea what I’m looking at.
The set came with four knobs, two with long shanks and two with short. All four have what appears to be the hardware to interface with a latch built in. I was trying to see if I could disassembly one to make a complete doorknob set, but to no avail.
What I do know is they’re brass, have no makers mark, and came with deco faceplates (not pictured). The only text on them I can find is the “TURN BRASS PLATE” shown. Turning it seems to expose two holes in the back and unlock the little slot at the bottom. I have been unable to do anything with said slot.
The plate says “SCHLAGE” so presumably it is a Schlage knob.
No hoes on the outside of the knob/shaft anywhere. Depressing the pin on the steel shaft doesn’t do anything (presumably this was the release for the other knob?)
Help me out Oppo. I have no idea what I am looking at here and my google fu is weak. I’ve already resigned myself to not using them, but now I’m just curious.
(Sorry about the hand grime, I’ve been painting...)

Hence why I bought/don’t want to give up on them haha. I think I can use the other plate on a new knob... maybe.

that art-deco “beauty ring” (as they appear to be called) is really great, but apparently fairly rare
google image search found me this etsy link, but the link itself is dead
did you buy the set new, as in it’s a current or recent Schlage reproduction, or did you buy it used an it’s actually antique?

Did not buy new. They were purchased on eBay with no indication of age. Given the text on the logo and inscription I’d say they were old, but not super old. Maybe 50s or 60s?

I truly think it is a vintage/antique knob set, based on the design. Closest I could find was this set, which isn’t the same knob and trim plate design exactly. and obviously
doesnt have that glorious rosette that is extra on yours

I would think you’d be able to keep those fabulous trim plates, and use them around a newer knob that better fits your purpose. although that vintage patina is goign to be hard to replicate.

I had door knobs like this on my house. The striker part is a very short, y-shaped metal thingy, but otherwise the same as modern strikers. How many do you need?
Edit: I think you’re also missing the interior part of the knob. I’ll take photos of my old ones when I get home.

The good news is, I’ve seen that setup before. The means by which the striker interfaces with the latch body was continued on for many years, maybe even to today. I believe the interface below will work.

Haven’t yet seen the brass version, but I actually ran across a consonant bakelite version of the knob...

That appears the be the style I have in the rest of the house with the super thin square shaft. The bakelite looks weeeeeeeird haha.

Yeah, the square shaft thing is an older style that the spring-loaded hollow/round Schlage is a big improvement on.
Probably not possible to retrofit the bakelite knobs, just thought you’d find them interesting. I think sometimes they were painted.
It’s easy to find the just-slightly-later Schlage with a smooth round knob, but that exact kind with the round knob with embossed ring... just seems to be very uncommon.

I think a trip to Home Depot is in order. If I can find a newer version I might be able to hack something together....

The two things to look for will be the clip-retained style of knob specifically from Schlage
and the slide-style/slotted can style striker. I think I’ve already found a striker that will work, so even if you can’t find one at the store, if you can find a matching knob that retains the same way, you’re more than in business.

I can confidently say that yes, that is a doorknob.

That trim is beautiful. The other side of the knob is different and came off by pushing that little pot metal button with a pick. The old square shaft style is referred to as a “mortise” lock and the body goes in from the edge of the door. I used to work at a very old locksmith shop in SF and always tried to stay mortise to keep a whole house looking cohesive. There are hundreds of different knob and escutcheon styles still a vailable for square shaft locks from high end hardware suppliers.

I can confirm that everything in the photos is Schlage. The knob style is/was called “Royal”, and was sold as early as the 1930s. Based on the photos, you appear to have two lock sets; in the photo where you’re holding two of them, you are holding two “outsides”. There wa s an inside mounting plate, screws, rose, and knob for your lock with the long spindle; the other lock may be a closet lock set, which would have only had a small turn on the inside (no knob). I also don’t see any latch bolts, but you may not have posted pictures of them. The ornamental plate was also sold as early as the 1930s, but I don’t think for very long (10-20 years). It is in very good shape - you can still clearly see the two-tone appearance. The design didn’t have a name (at least not that I’m aware of) - it was listed as design “701". The larger end was meant to go on top. So, to sum up, I think that you have the outside assemblies for two mid-century Schlage locks with Royal knobs, and a beautiful mid-century ornamental plate. (Source: I am an employee of Schlage, and serve as the company’s historical curator. )

Wow ! That is awesome information! T hank you! I’m in the process of trying to find some compatible hardware (have one hardware set en-route from eBay) so I can utilize as much of what I have as possible. That said, I only have two doors in the house that support this style hardware, the rest are mortise boxes. The auction came with four of the knobs (two with longer shanks, two with shorter, only two pictured ) and four of the ornamental plates. I’ll use what I can and the rest will go to the local ReStore.
My house is from 1918 and is mostly original. At some point a previous owner replaced the knobs upstairs with what appear to be gla ss knobs from Home Depot. So for a while I was buying cool compatible old door knobs off eBay and these accidentally slipped in even though they don’t fit. This is what most of the downstairs looks like: (please excuse the bad picture, paint on the door haha)
